To ensure that workers are not left behind in the face of climate change, automation, and energy transition, Bangladesh Labour
Bangladesh Labour Foundation has arranged a discussion on “COP 29 Climate Conference 2024: What are we expecting?” in November 9, 2024.
As COP 29 unfolds, Bangladesh, a nation on the frontlines of climate change, looks to global leaders for commitments that resonate with its unique challenges. The urgency for action is palpable; rising sea levels, erratic weather, and climate-induced migration are not just statistics for us—they are daily realities that disrupt lives and livelihoods. With this in mind, our focus is on ensuring that climate commitments translate into tangible support for those most affected.
Here are the key priorities we discussed, highlighting how COP 29 can make a real difference for Bangladesh:
Climate Finance: Climate funds shouldn’t be loans but compensation for the damages we face. These funds should come with no strings attached, providing real support for adaptation and resilience.
Workers’ Rights: As a frontline country in the battle against climate change, Bangladesh deserves a fair share of the global climate finance to ensure workers’ safety, especially in sectors like RMG and Tannery.
Child Labor & Climate Impact: Climate change directly impacts vulnerable children, worsening the child labour situation. The inadequate fund we receive only compounds these challenges.
Policy Participation: Workers’ voices, especially women’s, must be central in climate policy discussions to ensure fair and inclusive solutions.
Just Transition: COP 29 is centered around Just Transition, emphasizing the principle of “leaving no one behind.” We call for COP 29 to establish a Just Transition framework that supports Bangladesh in ensuring sustainable livelihoods for workers as we shift towards a greener economy.
