Capacity development of trade unions with appropriate advocacy and negotiation skill for adaptation of Artificial Intelligence and lobby for establishing AI policy in the National level

Overview

The apparel sector in Bangladesh is considered the backbone of our economy. It has significantly boosted foreign currency earnings and created job opportunities, especially for women. However, recent rapid technological transitions in this sector are causing job losses due to skill gaps among workers. Additionally, climate change is worsening the situation, leading to increased migration and health risks for workers. To assess the situation and raise awareness among relevant stakeholders, Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) with support from Solidaridad Network, has launched a project that will advocate for a Just Transition for those affected workers.

Objectives:

  • To assess the current and upcoming automation in the RMG and its impact on the workers and the community of Bangladesh.
  • To develop the capacity of the trade unions engaged in the RMG in regards to AI and automation and further build their negotiation skills.
  • To advocate and lobby with the government, brands, employers and other relevant stakeholders for developing national AI policy.
  • Collaborate with the government to enhance social security schemes, ensuring the well-being of workers during and after the transition.
