Strengthening Engagement for Decent Work in Bangladesh’s Tannery Sector
To increase support for decent employment in Bangladesh’s tannery industry, a delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO), Dhaka Office, visited the Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar, Dhaka. Workers, trade union officials, and industry stakeholders came together for the visit to evaluate working conditions and investigate methods to raise livelihoods and labor standards.
Increasing Communication for Decent Work
The delegation interacted directly with employees and factory management throughout the tour, as well as meeting with the leadership of the Tannery Workers Union (TWU). First-hand knowledge of leather processing activities was obtained through factory inspections, which also brought to light important issues with productivity, sustainability, compliance, and occupational safety and health (OSH).
Stronger workplace communication, increased compliance, and shared accountability among all stakeholders are necessary to promote decent employment in the tannery industry.
Building worker and trade union capacity is crucial to ensuring that workers’ rights are effectively represented and protected.
Sustainable sectoral transformation requires coordinated efforts through multi-stakeholder collaboration, including the execution of the National Plan of Action (NPA).
In order to guarantee the dignity, safety, and justice of tannery workers, it is possible to align national practices with international labor norms through renewed engagement with international partners.
