May Day-2021 is celebrated at BSCIC Tannery Industrial Estate, Savar, Dhaka
Labour Day 2021: May 1 is celebrated as International Workers Day. May Day, also called the International Workers’ Solidarity Day, commemorates the historic uprising of the working class in Chicago for an eight-hour workday. BLF organized the May Day 2021 theme was: ‘Sramik-Malik Nirbisesh, Mujib Borshe Gorbo Desh (Workers and employers will join hands to build the country in the Mujib Year).’ The program was inaugurated by Md. Abul Kalam Azad, President of Tannery workers Union (TWU) and TWU representatives, female and male workers and NGOs participated in the program. Speakers at the event demanded that all workers in the tannery industry must be paid due wages, overtime pay and Eid bonuses by the 25th Ramadan (8 May), the government has to sign the ILO Convention-190 immediately, Maternity leave should be extended to 6 months. They also urged for ensuring their safe and healthy workplace, logical wages and decent life and workers must be paid risk-allowance in return for work during a global pandemic. Moreover, all claims for medical and death compensation must be paid under the provision of the loss of earnings.
A colorful Rally and Discussion meeting were organized as the key activities of day observation. A total 250 people participated in these events. This year’s celebration was a little different because of the Covid-19 pandemic
