The dialogue brought together leaders of Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP), a platform of national trade union federations representing workers across Bangladesh, to discuss how the countryโs transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy can protect workersโ rights, employment, livelihoods, and social justice.
Advancing a Worker-Centred Just Transition
The discussion focused on the need to ensure that workers remain at the centre of Bangladeshโs climate transition. Participants highlighted the importance of integrating decent work, employment security, social protection, occupational safety and health, and workersโ participation into national climate policies and implementation strategies.
Key Discussions
Protecting workersโ employment, livelihoods, and income security throughout the transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy
Strengthening social protection systems and ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for all workers
Preparing workers for changing skills, new technologies, and emerging employment opportunities in green sectors
Ensuring the meaningful participation of workers and their representative organisations in policy development, decision-making, implementation, and monitoring
Protecting informal, low-income, and vulnerable workers from the risks and inequalities associated with the climate transition
Promoting climate finance and green investment that support quality employment, stronger labour rights, decent work, and resilient communities
The dialogue reaffirmed that workers should not be treated merely as beneficiaries of climate policies but as key stakeholders in shaping a fair and inclusive transition. Their voices and participation are essential to ensuring that climate action delivers meaningful outcomes in terms of employment, labour rights, and social justice.
The views and recommendations gathered from SKOP leaders will contribute to the Workers-Centred NDC 3.0 Just Transition Implementation Plan, being developed by NAJTB and BLF through consultations with trade union platforms and other stakeholders. The consolidated recommendations will be shared with the Government of Bangladesh for consideration in the final NDC 3.0 Implementation Plan, supporting a transition that is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and centred on workersโ rights and well-being.
