World Environment Day Roundtable Calls for Worker-Centred Climate Action

On World Environment Day 2026, Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF), together with NAJTB and the SMEP Program, organized a roundtable discussion on the growing impacts of climate change on workers and workplaces in Bangladesh.

Addressing Climate Risks in the World of Work

The discussion focused on the increasing threat of rising temperatures, heatwaves, and unsafe working conditions, which are placing millions of workers at risk, particularly those employed in factories, construction, transport, and other outdoor sectors. Participants highlighted the need for immediate policy and workplace interventions to safeguard workersโ€™ health, livelihoods, and productivity in the face of climate change as Bangladesh loses nearly 250 million working hours annually due to heat stress and economic losses from heat-related productivity decline are estimated at USD 1.78 billion each year.

Key Discussions

  • Workplace heat protection measures and stronger occupational safety standards are urgently needed.
  • Climate-sensitive social protection systems should be expanded to support vulnerable workers.
  • Investments in renewable energy and worker-centred climate policies are essential for a just transition.
