Tannery Workers Union demand wage board and increase of minimum wage for tannery workers

At a press conference held at National Press Club in the city, the Tannery Workers Union is calling on the government to form a wage board to review minimum wages for the country’s tannery workers. The leaders mentioned that last time it was declared in the year 2018 and according to the law the minimum wage should be reviewed in every five years which has already passed this February.

 

Abdul Malek, General Secretary of Tannery Workers Union read the statement on behalf of the union. He said, the minimum wage was not implemented in the tannery sector in the last five years. The union was also flexible as the tannery was shifted during that period and were struggling of finances. But because of the inflation and price hike it is now impossible for the workers to survive. He also mentioned that there are employers who recruited workers through un-registered contractor for fixed term work. This is against the law. He urge the government and employers to stop this types of activities for the betterment of the sector.

 

Abul Kalam Azad, President, Tannery Workers Union mentioned that a national plan of action to ensure social compliance in the Savar tannery industries has been undertaken by all stakeholders including the government. He told it is now very important for a proper implementation of this plan of action to ensure a decent workplace in the tanneries.

 

Among others Bangladesh Labour Foundations’ Chairman Abdus Salam Khan and Executive Director A K M Ashraf Uddin was also attended a guest in the press conference. A number of printing and electronic media journalists were attended in the press conference.
